PLANT GROWTH
I believe that the science activity from the previous
article needs a little more explanation. A great way of constructing the knowledge of kids is the
constructivism. What is it? The child discovers the knowledge whereas the role
of the teacher (or parent) is supportive. The main goal of the following
activities is to help kids develop abilities and scientific knowledge regarding
the natural environment.
Phase1: Orientation and Promotion of
ideas
Firstly at the observation center you may present to
your kids images that plants flowers and trees are shown.
What do plants need to grow?
Which is the food of plants?
Why the leaves are green?
You let the kids think the questions individually and may give them the following worksheet. (I found
the flower here
to make the worksheet)
After you may gather the children's work and discuss
all together the answers without telling them the right answer. You may hang
the worksheets on the bulletin board (or on the wall) so as later to compare
them with the new reconstructive knowledge.
Phase 2: Reconstruction of ideas
At this phase the children may plant the beans. The
kids may put some beans and cotton in two utensils. The one utensil should be
at the sun whereas the other should be hidden in a box or wardrobe (wherever we
can keep it away from the sun). The kids need to water both utensils with the seeds.
After one to two weeks the plants will grow.
What happened at the seeds which were in the sun?
What happened at the seeds which weren't in the sun?
Why do you believe
this happened?
Phase 3:
Implementation of ideas
You may ask children the next question so as to see if
the new knowledge which kids get can be implemented in other similar
situations.
What if we cover some plant's leaves
with silver foil while the whole other part of the plant is in the sun?
Phase 4:Review
At this phase the kids are asked to see and compare
their first ideas about the plant's growth with the reconstructive knowledge
they acquired. You may give the worksheet that kids have answered at the first
phase. Then you may discuss about the answers and may make a craft which may
present the plant growth.
The kids may draw with liquid glue the sun, the cloud,
the rain, the seed, the plants and the roots. You should let it dry and then
the children may paint the cardboard with watercolors and stick beans to the
seeds.
